Description
An 18ct gold cage work decorated snuff box, by Alexander J Strachan, London 1808, the cover inset with a micromosaic depicting a Tiger mauling a Bull after a painting by Wenceslaus (Wenzel) Peter (AUSTRIAN, 1745-1829), the rectangular panel initialled NA (possibly N Angelini) 72.5 x 50mm, the back of the box with a smaller oval micromosaic panel depicting a leaping lion, unsigned, 55 x 22mm, overall box size 85 x 62.5 x 30mm, gross weight 378gm
Condition
Generally in good condition. Some dirt and staining below the applied decoration to the sides and base. Main micromosaic panel (initialled NA bottom left)has a small blemish midway between the tails of the bull and the tiger (visible in the images). The micromosaic of the lion on base intact but unsigned. Full hallmarks to the inside base of the box with partial marks to the inside cover. Hinge and 'bite' good
