Here Oswald Grill, known for his landscapes, created an unusual townscape. In a subtle color scheme and with accurate lines the painter depicted a city tower with adjacent buildings before a cloudy sky. Except for a horse-drawn cart, the square in the old town of Ulm is abandoned, evoking eerie atmosphere of the picture. In the present work Grill, who was first and foremost a skilled painter of nature, managed to demonstrate his sense of architectural proportions and perspective.



The work is signed lower left ‘O. GRILL’. On the reverse with a handwritten label titled ‘Ein Ulmer Stadtturm’ and a label from the ‘Bund zeichnender Künstler in München’. It is in very good condition, the edges are a little soiled. The frame is damaged. The framed work measures 74 x 61 cm, the cardboard measures 67 x 54 cm.



Oswald Grill (1878-1964)

Oswald Grill studied at the arts college of Vienna and at the Art Academy in Munich. He started his career as an independent artist in 1906 and returned to Vienna where he became a member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus in 1908, serving as president from 1917 until 1938. In 1929, Grill was called to the university as professor and he received numerous awards during his lifetime. His oeuvre comprises mainly landscape paintings, which he often exhibited at the Vienna Künstlerhaus and the Glaspalast in Munich. (tfa)
