Water is a central subject in Altmann's oeuvre; rivers and coastal views are presented in loose brushwork with impressionistic use of light. Our painting shows one of his characteristic costal views; Altmanns paintings fetch up to more than €13,000 on the international auction market

The painting offered here was created by the Russian artist Alexandre Altmann during the first half of the 20th century. Presented is a coastal view near the town Douarnenez of the Plomarch area in Brittany. Altmann's central subject in many of his paintings is water, either of the coast or rivers, which he represents in loose brushwork and impressionistic use of lighting.


The work is signed and titled lower left ‘Alexandre Altmann - Falaise à Plomarch’. The canvas is laid down on panel, the left edge has been a little cut off. The painting is overall in good condition, partially light craquelure visible. The image measures 34 x 48 cm.


Alexandre Altmann (1885-1950)

Alexandre Altmann was born in Russia in 1885. He studied in Odessa, Ukraine, and in Vienna before he moved to Paris in 1909, where he also studied at the famous Académie Julian. During his time in Paris he made contact with artists of the Fauves and Cubists. He exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants and the Salon des Tuileries. With the outbreak of the First World War he returned to Moscow, where he made the acquaintance of Marc Chagall. After the war he returned to the French capital, where he exhibited at the Salon d'Automne in 1922. (cru)
