The landscape depictions by the Italian artist are often provided with figural or animal staffage and in subject matters that are inspired by his home country. These four small-format paintings, executed in oil on academy board, depict landscapes at the sea. They are the places Tramonto und L’Isola di Sateno in Albania and Baia di Valona and Porto Palermo in Italy. They describe scenes from the First World War. The painting is executed in short dynamic brushstrokes and of a lively range of colors.
All four paintings are inscribed and signed. The paintings are in good condition with toned boards and partly marginal wear. The frames show traces of wear like color chips. The academy boards each measure approximately 18 x 26 cm. The dimensions, including the frames, are each 26 x 34 cm.
Tommaso Cascella (1890-1968)
The Italian landscape painter and majolica artist was resident in Pescara. He was a pupil of his father with whom together he painted the Palazzo Reale in Bolzano. For a short period of time he studied at the Academy in Rome and then continued studying in Paris. He created mural paintings in the Banca di Napoli in Pescara. His main body of work is dominated by often with figural or animal staffage equipped landscapes that are mostly of heavy gloomy atmosphere. In addition there are portrayals of farming life in the Abruzzi and from the First World War. Cascella created murals at the Consiglio Provinciale in Aquila. (tmi)
