Dimensions: 17.5 x 24.5 cm
Very good condition
Provenance: Private collection, Berlin; bought from the artist’s family
Konchalovsky was not only a painter, but also a very talented draughtsman; the auction record for one of his works on paper currently sets at around €28,000
The present work is characterized by rapid and quite confident brush strokes. It captures a street scene with a horse and a man walking on a palm tree-lined street. The watercolor drawing dates back to the period around 1910, when Petr Konchalovsky was one of the main representatives of Russian avant-garde. In 1910/11, he contributed to the founding of the artists’ group ‘Jack of Diamonds’, organized in Moscow. These painters were deeply inspired of Post-Impressionism, Fauvism and Cubism and shaped contemporary developments of Russian art for about seven years. The group also paved the way for other internationally well-known artists such as Kazimir Malevich.
The paper is slightly discolored and matted on a passe-partout backing board. The image measures 17.5 x 24.5 cm. The overall dimensions including frame are 31.5 x 38.5 cm.

In Paris, he exhibited his works at the Salon d'Automne and the Salon des Indépendants. In 1911 he was one of the founders of the Russian artist group ‘Jack of Diamonds’, one of the most important groups of the Russian avant-garde. In the 1920s he worked as an art teacher and received commissions as a set designer. In 1922 his first solo exhibition was held at the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow. This was followed by exhibitions in Berlin, New York and Paris. (cbo)
