Mario Schifano (1934-1998)
Mario Schifano was born in Libya in 1934. His first works were monochromatic images in which the artist later introduced emblems of popular culture such as billboards, road signs and Coca Cola logos. In 1962 he travelled to the US, where he met artists such as Frank O'Hara, Jasper Johns, Rothko and Warhol. In the same year he participated in the legendary exhibition ‘International Exhibition of the New Realists’ in the Gallery of Sidney Janis alongside iconic American pop artists. Back in Italy, he regularly exhibited his work in Rome, Paris and Milan. In 1964 and 1978 he participated in the Venice Biennale. In addition, Schifano worked as a filmmaker since the mid-1960s, made music and periodically turned away from painting. From the 1970s he primarily worked with television images, which he mounted on canvas and reworked with color. These motifs were recurring in the artist’s work until the late 1990s. In addition, Schifano created an extensive oeuvre of prints.
