Born in Dresden in 1939, the painter and sculptor Ralf Winkler adopted several pseudonyms, of which ‘A. R. Penck’ is certainly the best-known. He received his first drawing lessons from the artist Strawalde in the early 1950s, when he also completed an apprenticeship as advertising artist. In 1976, he made the acquaintance of Jörg Immendorff, with whom he collaborated for a few years. In 1980, Penck moved to West Germany. Three years later he settled in London, followed by Dusseldorf, where he became a professor at the Art Academy in 1988.
