Description
A nice Byzantine bronze lamp with large cross, c. 6th Century AD, the omega-shaped body with flat shoulders that extend as flanges around the periphery and the spout is upturned. The ring handle is surmounted by a large cross, a hinge for the now-missing lid before, and the ring base on bottom with square mounting socket projecting up into the body. H: 5 in (12.9cm), L: 6 ½ in (16.4cm). Corrosian hole on underside. A very interesting and attractive example! Cf. Christies 12 Dec. 2002 Lot 261 for a near identical example; Ex Joseph C. Morton collection.
