Description
[Presidential Signatures/Ship Passport]. James Monroe and John Quincy Adams. Ship Passport sgd. by James Monroe as President and John Quincy Adams in his capacity as Secretary of State. Countersigned by “J. Gibbon.” Blanks filled in at least 2 others (probably a secretary and the ship’s captain, Arthur Walden). Engraved on vellum, top of the sheet scallop cut, seal within plate mark at lower left. About 15" x 11 1/4" at edge of sheet. Sight condition near fine save for 2 tiny adhesive bits near corners of verso. Not examined out of glass. Printed text, with secretarial notations within the blanks denoted by single quotation marks: “By the President of the United States of America/ Suffer the ‘Ship Neptune of Portsmouth Arthur Walden~’ master or commander of the burthen of ‘Three hundred thirty seven & 61/95 tons’ or thereabouts mounted with ‘No’ guns navigated with “ 'Fourteen-‘ men/ To Pass with her Company Passengers Goods and Merchandize without any hinderance seizure or molestation the said ‘Ship’ appearing by good testimony to belong to one or more of the Citizens of the United States and to him or them only/ Given under my Hand and the Seal of the United States of America the ‘fourteenth’ day of ‘September,’ in the year of our lord ‘one’ thousand ‘Eight’ hundred and ‘twenty three’… State of ‘Virginia’/ District of ‘Richmond’/ Countersigned by ‘J Gibbon.’” Above seal: "Number ’75 seventy five’." On the verso, all notations are handwritten. Inked in center section of verso: “Ship Neptune.” Verso also has notation “District and Port of Boston Harbor… May 18, 1826/ This Certfiies that George Langdon is assistant master of the within ship.” Another section of verso: “District of Portsmouth./ John Leach having taken the oath required by law is at present Master of the within named and… of Nathan Walden late Master-“ followed by the signature of the customs collector. Handwritten on another section of verso: “Dist. Of Portsmouth Apr. 26. 1827/ Wm. Langdon having taken the oath required by Law is at present now the within named owner in heir of Geo. Langdon late master.” Text side signed by James Monroe and John Quincy Adams.
