Description
[Fore-edge Painting]. THE POEMS OF THOMAS GRAY. With Critical Notes, A Life of the Author, and an Essay on his Poetry, by the Rev. John Mitford. London: Printed for White, Cochrane, and Co… By S. Hamilton, Weybridge, Surrey. 1814. 8vo. viii, clxxxiv, 271pp. Gilt-decorated red leather, aeg, gilt dentelle, gray endpapers. [Probably not the book's primary binding, given the “Lon. 1814” on spine, but the paper on the verso of the front free endpaper matches the inserted leaf that carries the gift inscription described below.] Endpapers scuffed and stained. Pencilling to the inserted leaf that has the inscription. Bdg and foreedge very good. Light dampstaining throughout text (not affecting foreedge painting). Ink inscription on inserted leaf: “E. libris, Herbert Tykeham/ Tyrthrop House…” Lower portion of inscription ends, “…Schoolfellow of Eton College… 1826=/ ‘on drawing.’” This is presumably an inscription to Philip Thomas Herbert Wykeham, Esq. Tythrop House was in Oxfordshire. 2 frontises (facing title and the 2nd page [i]). The painted foreedge shows Eton College viewed from across the river, with a sailboat and trees visible off to the side.
