A fine Pre-Columbian Maya drinking vessel featuring carved and incised design elements, circa 600 A.D. – 900 A.D. This rare example exhibits a graceful form of high technical merit on the part of the ancient artisan. It displays carved and incised designs that likely depict the deity Chac, as well as other iconographic and decorative elements. The surface also displays a fine wash of light brown pigment, with dark brown accenting the upper register of carved/incised designs. Remnants of original white stucco decorative accents remain in some of the carved/incised designs.This ancient earthenware vessel must be held in the hand to truly be appreciated. The form itself is very balanced and fine, with thin walls. It also feels remarkably light in the hand, due to the very fine quality clay from which it was made. These features attest to the high quality of the material selected for its composition, and to the highest level of skilled craftsmanship employed by the ancient maker in forming, decorating and firing it.
