George III Sterling Silver Butter Tub, hallmarked London, 1809-1810, by Rebecca Emes and Edward Barnard I (fl. 1808-1827), of squat "bucket" form, with "basketweave" banding and egg-and-dart rim, with arched handles, reeded foot, cavetto-domed lid and turned finial, engraved with a George III garter badge, h. 5", dia. 6", 19.35 t. oz.
Condition
Overall Condition: Good. Some scattered scuffs and dings consistent with age, but otherwise in very good condition with no dents, breaks or repairs noted. The piece has a fitted colorless glass liner of later date, with "starburst" base; the glass liner has a 1/2" long, half-moon-shaped chip on the rim. Hallmarked (on the underside) with: 1) the sterling lion passant; 2) the London crowned leopard's head; 3) the date letter "O" for 1809-1912; the "RE/EB" trefoil maker's mark of Emes & Barnard; and 5) the George III bust duty mark. Marks very good; the lid part-marked on the sleeve.
