Confederate Pass for Ten Ladies to Visit Sullivan’s Island
December 11, 1862-Dated Civil War, Partially-Printed Document Signed, “Wm. J. Gayer, A.A.G. Provost Marshall” 1 page, measuring 7.25” x 3.375”, Fine.
This December 11, 1862 Document reads, in full:

“Confederate States of America, --- Provost Marshal’s Office, --- First Military District, S.C., Charleston, Dec. 11th, 1862. --- Permission is granted John H. Tyler & 10 ladies to visit Sullivan’s Island, S.C. Upon honor not to communicate, in writing or verbally, for publication, any fact ascertained, which, if known to the enemy, might be injurious to the Confederate States of America. --- Good for one days. -- (Signed) Wm. J. Gayer, A.A.G., Provost Marshal.”

This Military Pass is printed upon “brown bag” Confederate Paper. The writing is in ink with a further endorsement on the rear reading: “This permits good to visit the fort by order Col. Butler. Good to return to the city.” William J. Gayer was the Captain serving as the Provost Marshal in Charleston. Col. Butler was William Butler of the 1st South Carolina Regular Infantry. A neat piece of CSA wartime history.
