Description
China, circa 18th/19th century
15 ¾ x 4 ½ x 3 ¾ in. (height x width x depth)
Provenance: Hong Kong mid 1960s
Bodhisattvas were enlightened beings who, rather than becoming Buddha, chose to remain on Earth to help ease the suffering of mankind. In art, bodhisattvas differ from buddhas in their bejeweled ornamentation. This beautiful bodhisattva figure is fitted with long, colorful robes, gold jewelry and a large, petal carved crown. The hair is gathered into a large topknot and in its hand is an orb.
The bodhisattva figure shows age wear, with age cracks primarily on the base, paint loss and minor chipping. There is an old loss to the pointer finger on the figure’s left hand and a partial sticker adhered to the back. The figure measures 15 ¾ x 4 ½ x 3 ¾ in. (height x width x depth).
