Historical depiction of the oldest existing bridge spanning the Ahr after the flood of 1910 on a beautiful Art Nouveau plate

This large, elegant ornamental plate of the Königliche Porzellanmanufaktur Berlin was made in 1914 after the design of Franz Tücke from February 1909. The round, flat plate with round rim shows on the mirror in polychrome underglaze painting a waterside view of a nightly village in the Rhineland-Palatinate. Depicted is under a starry sky the St Nepomuk-bridge in Rech, also known as Ahrbrücke. This bridge is the only bridge that survived the great flood of 1910 and is now a cultural monument. The figure of Saint Nepomuk as seen on the plate, does not exist in this configuration any longer, because in 1919 American occupying troops threw the old effigy into the river and destroyed it. The house in the left background of the image has been preserved until today in a similar form.

The plate is marked on the reverse by blue underglaze with the orb and scepter marks of the Königliche Porzellanmanufaktur. The embossed model number ‘9124‘ as well as the year letter ‘S‘ and further symbols are visible on the reverse, too. The plate is in a very good condition with minimal signs of age and wear. The diameter of the plate measures 41.2 cm.

KPM - Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur Berlin

The manufactory that was founded in 1763 by Frederick the Great was based on three private companies that had tried for some time to produce porcelain in Berlin. The manufactory has been located near the Tiergarten in Berlin since 1871. It took up the production of painted porcelain tiles under the direction of Professor Alexander Kips and made a huge profit. After the destruction of the manufactory during the Second World War the Land of Berlin took over the company in 1988. Since 2006 the company is owned by the private banker Jörg Woltmann. (nlu)
