Magnificent vase in the ancient style from the oldest still existing porcelain factory in Thuringia, to be used as a lamp foot as well
The present amphora vase, a high quality product of the Älteste Volkstedter Porzellan-Fabrik, shows influences from models made by KPM and Capodimonte. Originally used as a lamp base, it is distinguished by its splendid relief decoration. The recessed and profiled foot stands on an octagonal base, on which is mounted the high vase body. The vase is all round adorned with semi-sculptured, antique-like dancing putti with a goat and a lion at garlands, gilt bead rings and vertical leaf decorations. The sides are fitted with high volute handles mounted on lions head mascarons, holding laurel wreath in their mouths. The overhanging neck and the mouth rim also boast a sculpted acanthus decoration.
The vase is marked with the under glaze blue crown over AEV (merged to ‘N’). It is in very good condition, showing minor abrasion of the gilding. The overall height, including the plinth, is about 52 cm.
Aelteste Volkstedter Porzellanmanufaktur
The Aelteste Volkstedter Porzellanmanufaktur is, as the name suggests, the oldest porcelain manufactory in Thuringia, Germany, and dates back as far as 1760, when Georg Heinrich Macheleid discovered the right formula for creating porcelain mass. The porcelain manufactory was founded by order of the court and existed successfully for 100 years when it had to be sold in order to avoid bankruptcy. The manufactory has changed owners many times ever since, but it has always kept the name ‘Aelteste Volkstedter Porzellanmanufaktur’. In 2006/2007, the manufactory was bought by Seltmann Weiden and is now named ‘Gläserne Manufaktur’, still producing high quality porcelain. The artful figures have always been manufactured by hand and still are. They still meet the highest standards. Their liveliness, elegance and the high quality painting speak for themselves and enjoy the highest reputation.
