Description
MCCARTHY DOMINIC: (1892-1975) Australian Military officer, Victoria Cross winner for his actions near Madam Wood, East of Vermandovillers, France, on 23rd August 1918. Vintage signed and inscribed postcard photograph of McCarthy standing outdoors in a three quarter length pose wearing an overcoat and military cap. Signed ('L. McCarthy V.C.') in dark fountain pen ink to a light area at the base of the image, adding the initials of the Australian Imperial Force and date 11th September 1919 in his hand beneath his signature. Laid down to a page contained in an autograph album, the opposite page again signed and inscribed by McCarthy in dark fountain pen ink, 'With tons of Love & Kisses to my own Darling Dob from the Great big Australian Victoria Cross Croix de Guerre avec Palm, L McCarthy VC, 16th Battn. A. I. F.'. Tape stains to the edges of each page, only slightly affecting the base of the photograph and not the signatures or inscription. The album also includes various verses and a few drawings etc., in the hands of family and friends of the collector. A few pages loose. Covers detached and lacking spine. Together with two further autograph albums containing signatures of various servicemen of World War I (most in pencil), Adrian Boult, Mark & Michal Hambourg, John Ireland, Benno Moiseiwitsch, Thomas Armstrong, Isobel Baillie and a few other classical musicians etc. (some on clipped pieces laid down to pages).
