Description
1849-1851, Edo period. Oban woodblock print. Ink and color on paper. Maple Leaves from the series, 'Flowers for the Five Seasons' (Goetsu no hana zukushi). Published by Kobayashi Taijiro. A young man, sumptuously dressed, his impressive gilt sword on display. The maple-laden cartouche has the Genji mon seal made to represent the Tale of Genji, specifically chapter 19, Usugumo or Wisps of Clouds, which describes Genji's elaborate dress. Title cartouche to upper right, artist's signature, publisher's and censor's seals to right. Published by Kobayashi Taijiro. Mounted in a mat. With toning and fading, tear to upper left corner, backed with old paper. Approx. 15 by 10 1/4 in., 38 by 26 cm.
