Description
A beautiful fossil shark dorsal spine of the extinct Hybodus, Cretaceous, c. 110 million years old. This example is in near perfect condition with only some minor wear to the tip. L: 5 ¼ in (13.3 cm). It is unrepaired and a great example of a spine from an extinct genus of sharks which used to be widespread, first appearing during the Permian period and disappearing during the Late Cretaceous period. They were able to eat a wide range of foods due to possessing two different types of teeth - sharper for catching fish and other fast moving creatures and flatter teeth for grinding so they could eat shellfish and similar types. They are characterized by the dorsal spine which is thought to have served a defensive function.
