Pompous columbine cup with many cheerful details
The columbine cup is a variant of the humped standing cup, whose cuppa is designed in the form of a columbine, which in the middle ages was a symbol of salvation and fertility. The present cup was manufactured between 1650 and 1657 by the Nuremberg silversmith Jeremias Frencking (master in 1634). It delights with the beautiful humped décor at the curved cuppa and the ring stand and the decorative chased tendrils decoration. As well, the filigree silver clasps with volutes and leaves are particularly striking in this very elegant and high-quality object.
The cup is hallmarked with the maker's mark ‘IF’ at the foot and at the cuppa. It is in very good condition, showing minor wear. The height is 22 cm, and the overall weight is circa 190 grams. (cko)
