Description
in England and Wales, first edition, [one of 100 copies], interleaved as usual, this copy inscribed "T.F.T. The Gift of the Editor" in contemporary hand at head of title and with note at foot, with extensive ink annotations to text and interleaves , a few ink stains, many leaves reinforced at inner margin, modern calf preserving old red morocco label on spine, [Northup 464; Rothschild 1075], 16mo, [privately printed for William Mason], [1773]. Scarce anonymous work by the renowned poet & literary scholar, author of Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard . According to the Advertisement the work was originally drawn up on the blank pages of Kitchen s English Atlas and was intended to be interleaved for readers to add their own comments. The additional note at the foot of the title reads, "NB. this book had been terribly soil'd & misus'd (tho' not intentionally) by Mr P_e of St.John's; who is not remarkable for cleanliness." Another note concerns Newstead Abbey, home of Lord Byron, "Newstead has been most shamefully defaced, & the house almost pulled down, by Ld. B. the remains of the building are a fine, but melancholy, object, from Mr Montagu's beautiful walk at Papplewick."
