Two complementary works from the series of voluminous, swelling works in which the artist evokes the elusive universe

Offered here are two works by the eminent Op art artist Victor Vasarely, created in 1969. It is a pencil drawing on firm paper, which is a kind of a preliminary study to the works from the series of voluminous, swelling works in which the artist deals with the elusive universe, as it is expressed in the second work, a silkscreen in colors. The deforming elements seem thereby to bulge out of the picture, creating an optical illusion in the eye of the beholder.

The serigraph is signed ‘Vasarely’, dated ‘1969’ and numbered ‘1/150’. Both works are in good condition. The pencil drawing is performed on two joined papers and shows slight signs of use such as occasionally slight creases, and few stains. Verso by hand dedicated ‘Pour Marlene Dubois (M. Marcus)’. The serigraph in colors on China silk is overall in very good condition with minor scattered foxing. The silk is laid down on hardboard. The image size is 81 x 80 cm and 91 x 91 cm. The framed dimensions are 91 x 91 cm and 96 x 96 cm.

Victor Vasarely (1906-1997)

Victor Vasarely was born in Pécs in Hungary in 1906. He started studying at the Podolini-Volkmann Academy in Budapest in 1927. In 1930 he moved to Paris where he successfully worked as a graphic designer and started exploring the effect of geometric patterns on the senses. Through that interest he created his own geometric abstractions. The variations of these are image patterns with kinetic effects on the viewer. With this concept Vasarely created the basis and a fundament for the origins of Op Art. Between 1955 and 1968 he regularly took part in the documenta. In 1976 he opened his Vasarely foundation in Aixe-en-Provence and helped to build an institute for architecture. In the same year the city Pécs, where he was born, honoured him with a Vasarely museum. A second museum opened in 1987 at the castle Zichy in Budapest. (cru)
