painted carved wood head, hands and limbs, red, blue and white costume, 540mm. high , [late nineteenth century?] The stringing is unusual: besides the usual strings there is one to operate the opening mouth and others to the low chest, shoulders, lower back, and heels suggesting that the figure could perform a handstand and other acrobatics. It is thought that the clown was known as Joey, and belonged to the Day family, puppeteers who ran their Teatro del Picoli in Hastings during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
