Description
Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912)
Elephant masks on the neck
Representation of phoenixes and peonies
Height: 31 cm
Very good condition
The beautiful, large pair of Japanese vases dates to the Japanese Meiji period (1868-1912). This piece of Arita porcelain is a mixture of Kutani and Imari. The vases have an unusually archaic form and elephant masks decorate both sides of the necks. Dragons surrounded by flames in oddly shaped cartridges are seen between these elephant heads. Representations of phoenixes and giant peonies are seen on the body. It is also decorated with an image of a samurai with a court lady. The colourful ornamental painting makes these vases a precious artifact.
The pair of Japanese vases is in very good condition with minimum paint abrasion. The vases have a six-character mark on the underside and also an artist signature inside the large cartouche. The height of each vase is 31 cm.
