On a stepped base and crowned by a triple cornice
On all sides richly decorated with floral ornate fittings, hinges and locks
With a front, two-leaf folding door
Inside a further folding doors with a gilt wood lattice and gaze
The upper inner area with an open work band of clouds
The roof inside imitates a shrine and is heightened with gilt
Painted columns and pedestal for monks, which are decorated with pines trees
Three deepening for Buddha and Bodhisattva figures
Among richly carved panels with pine décor
Three horizontally arranged drawers embellished with reddish-brown lacquer, tendrils and flowers
In front of it a black lacquer plate
Therein reserves with a gold lacquer ground - Lohan depictions and inscriptions
On the sides of the shrine five rectangular cassettes

This impressive Butsudan it is probably a shrine of a wealthy merchant. The latter has a considerable size and has been manufactured in elaborate craftsmanship. It is equipped with beautiful metal fittings and double swinging doors.
Butsudan
A Butsudan is a shrine in a Buddhist temple or a monastery. Often also a Buddhist family altar in an apartment is called Butsudan. This serves as an expression of solidarity with Buddhism and the worship of ancestors. The souls of the deceased are offered rice or tea. The Buddhist family altars vary in shapes and size.
Condition: The shrine is in age-related condition with signs of use. The front plate shows some cracks and loss of material. Lacquer and gold wear are visible here and there. The height measures 155 cm, the width 75 cm and the depth 69,5 cm.
