Description
Tuscany/Italy, circa 300 BC
Faliscan red figure jug
Black and partly white paint
Height: 42 cm
Very good condition
Provenance: German private collection
The present Faliscan jug from Tuscany dates from circa 300 BC and impresses not only by its size, but also by the lush detailed painting in black, which omits the figures in red. The jug has a high round foot with a bulbous body and a long retracted neck. The spout features a beveled edge, which is curved inward. The wide handle passes over into the mouth edge, which forms two cornucopias above. The black paint on the wall shows a frieze with volutes and palmettes. Above there is a fictitious gadrooned frieze. The neck is decorated with volutes, palmettes and a female figure. The upper edge presents a stylized leaf frieze.
The jug is in very good condition, showing minor losses of the paint. The height is 42 cm. (cko)
