This carriage clock with cloisonné decoration was presumably made in France and Switzerland around 1900 by the company L. Vrard & Co. for the Chinese market. It is fitted with a brass movement with spring, balance wheel and a rack movement striking the half-hour on a bell. The movement plate is inscribed with Chinese characters ‘Frequently growing success’ and the number 225.An additional bell for the alarm clock is installed underneath the case. The white enamel dial displays Roman numbers, while the dial of the alarm clock shows Arabic numbers. Both are fitted with delicate blued steel hands. The richly decorated, quintuple faceted glazed and gold-plated Swiss brass case has a handle and screwed on multicolored ornaments as well as six butterflies in cloisonné technique. Included is a key for the movement. The carriage clock fits into a modern wooden transportation box with brass handle.
The clock is in a very good condition with minimal signs of age and wear. The case dimensions are approx. 14 x 9.5 x 8.5 cm. During in house testing the clock was fully functional. Long term precision and regularity cannot be guaranteed.
L. Vrard & Co.
The anglo-chinese company L. Vrard & Co. were one of the most eminent watchmakers that specialized in producing watches for the Chinese market. It was founded in 1860 under the name Laidrich & Vrard. As of 1862, the firm started operating in Tientsin, followed by branch in Shanghai, which also represented the Swiss watch manufacturer Bovet-Fleurier. The design of the watches was inspired by characteristical Asiatic ornamentation and thus the high-quality European cases decorated by artists like Marc Dufaux, Louis Millenet and Louis Rosselet were extremely popular.
