This graceful potpourri vase was made around 1850-65 in Meissen, presumably after a design by Michel Victor Acier. Above a square base the hexagonal vase corpus is positioned, additionally supported by a funnel-shaped foot and a hemispheric acanthus subset. On the horizontal shoulder sits a short neck that is decorated with a ribbon of full-round carved rose flowers. Furthermore, the horizontal side of the neck is perforated with circulating round holes. On top of that is a cylindrical stepped cover with pine cone handle. The corpus is enclosed by festoons of oak foliage. Each six obverses are embellished alternating with finely painted medallion after hunting motifs presumably by Philips Wouwerman and a full-round carved wreath of roses. Included is an expertise.
The vase is marked underglaze blue with the crossed swords of Meissen on the underside of the foot. It is in a good condition with signs of age and wear. The four corners of the base as well as some parts of the oak foliage and other small areas of the corpus are professionally restored and recolored. The dimensions are approx. 17 x 13 x 13 cm.
Michel Victor Acier (1736-1799)
Around 1764 the porcelain manufactory Meissen was looking for new modelers across the country’s borders. The French sculptor Michel Victor Acier, born 1736 in Versailles, seized the opportunity and moved from Paris to Dresden with the age of 30. From 1775 onwards, he was artistic director and with his new style he became pioneer of the Meissen Classicism. During his 15 working years he designed a variety of sculptures and other objects that mirror the transition from Baroque towards Classicism. (nlu)
