Splendid ivory jug with the finest carvings of hunting scenes
The present Viennese lidded jug from the 19th century delights with the use of different materials and the fine carvings on the ivory corpus. The scene shows hunters with their hunting dogs and game set in a highly detailed landscape backdrop. The round foot, the hinged lid and the curved handle, manufactured from gilt 15 lot silver, are adorned with Rococo ornaments and give the stunning jug a high-quality framing.
The jug was partly made of older Elements , so the bottom is hallmarked with the Vienna “Radpunze” with the date 174?. There is also an unidentified mark ‘H’ (?) and amaker’s mark ‘*GW’. The foot and the hinge of the lid (two times) bear the Russian hallmark ‘84’. The jug shows some wear consistent with age. The insert and the upper rim is a later (maybe Russian) addition. The ivory body shows restored tears. The overall height of the jug, with lid, is 30 cm.
