Description
Edmund Darch Lewis (American/ Pennsylvania, 1835-1910). "Forty Steps, Newport", watercolor and gouache on paper, signed lower right "Edmund D. Lewis 1882". Painting depicts a view of a cliff in Newport, Rhode Island where David Priestly Hall built "The Forty Steps" in the 1830's, which is a stone staircase running down the side of the cliff to the water's edge. The cliff is pictured with a small beach fronting it, waves crashing over rocky outcrops, birds flying in formation both above and below the cliff, and sailboats in silhouette in the left background. Inscribed lower right below image "Forty steps Newport". Framed 28.5" x 38.25", unframed sight size of image 18.5" x 28.25".
