Item Details

Description

Late 19th/ early 20th century copy after "Apollo Belvedere" of 330â€“320 BC which is attributed to Leochares (Greek, fl. c.375 BC - c.326 BC). A life-size Roman reproduction in marble dating to the 2nd century AD resides in the Belvedere Courtyard of the Vatican Museum in Italy. Sculpture depicts the Greek god Apollo as a standing archer having just shot an arrow, possibly having just slain the serpent Python, the guard of Delphi. The nude Apollo stands with right foot forward and left arm outstretched holding a fragment of a bow with cape suspended from his neck and draped over his left arm, with an acanthus leaf covering his modesty and leather sandals on his feet. The sculpture is presented on a round stone plinth with incurvate edge. Apparently unsigned. Approximately 13 3/8" tall including plinth x 5" diameter._x000D_
