Decorative still life with hunting scene in fine trompe l'oeil painting
The present still life was painted in 1876 by the accomplished artist Marie von Valenzi. Two birds, a woodpecker and a hawfinch, are depicted in trompe l'oeil before an indistinct background. The artist created a masterful and lifelike depiction of the plumage, which she painted with fine detail. A skilled rendering of light and shadow lets the birds stand out before the background in an almost sculptural manner.
The painting is signed and dated lower right ‘M. v. Valenzi 1876’. It is in good condition consistent with age. The canvas is slightly wavy, there is some surface soiling due to age and rubbing along the edges due to framing. There is fine craquelure. There is a color chip to the lower left corner and a scratch (approx. 0,5 cm) to the background area between the two birds. The framed work measures 44.5 x 34 cm, the stretcher frame measures 40 x 29 cm.
