Very good condition
Beautiful example of one of Skarbina’s typical urban street scenes

‘Droscke im Regen’ [Hackney Cab in the Rain] was made in 1896 by Franz Skarbina. A nocturnal street in the rain is presented. A horse that pulls a carriage is entering the picture frame from the left hand side. Besides a figure with an umbrella in the right half of the image, the street is deserted. Lights from street lamps and houses are reflected on the cobblestones and add to the particular atmosphere of the picture. The impression of the wet street, the rain and the nocturnal sentiment is very authentic. You can almost hear the sounds of the horse’s hoofbeats.

The lithograph is signed and dated on the stone ‘F Skarbina 1896’ at the lower right. The condition of the mounted lithograph is very good. The frame shows minimal signs of age and wear. The framed dimensions are 48.5 x 41 cm, while the lithograph itself measures 24 x 21 cm.

Franz Skarbina (1849-1910)

The painter Franz Skarbina was born in Berlin in 1849. In the period from 1865-1869 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin, followed by several study trips before he attained a position as an assistant teacher at the Academy. In 1888 he was finally appointed a full professor. Together with Max Liebermann and Walter Leistikow he founded the artists' group ‘Gruppe der XI’ in 1892. Their organization of a Munch exhibition created quite a scandal at the time. Skarbina was also co-founder of the Berlin Secession in 1898. He furthermore was awarded with gold medal as a part of renowned art exhibitions in 1891 and in 1905. (nlu)
