Published by J. Buyst, Brussels
Image dimensions: 33.4 x 26.6 cm
Very good condition
Early illustration by the great surrealist artist René Magritte; large posters by the artist from the 1920s fetch up to €12,000 at international auctions

From 1923 on René Magritte initially worked as a poster and commercial artist. From this period is the title page design for the piano sheet music for ‘Marche du snobs’ by Fernand Rousseau. In striking black and red, with the involvement of the white paper, three elegantly dressed men, probably the ‘snobs’ are represented. The sheet music was published in 1924 by the Brussels Publisher J. Buyst.

This zincography in colors is executed on a folded sheet of music and in very good condition with only minor age-appropriate darkness at the edges. The image measures 33.4 x 26.6 cm, the double sheet 35 x 54 cm.

René Magritte (1989-1964)

René Magritte studied from 1916 to 1918 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels. First, he earned his living as a pattern designer for wallpaper, and from 1923 on as a poster and commercial artist. The piano teacher of his brother Paul brought Magritte in contact with the Dada movement. Because of a fixed term contract with a Brussels gallery in 1926, Magritte could for the first time fully concentrate on his Artistic work, and thus his first surrealist image origin in this year. Magritte became friends with surrealist artists such as André Breton and Hans Arp and exhibited in 1938 on the ‘Exposition internationale du Surréalisme’ in Brussels. Magritte also worked as an editor for various magazines and newspapers, and made several short films. René Magritte is one of the most important surrealist artists. His factually descriptive images obtain their magical effect by paradoxical juxtaposition of everyday objects. (fea)
