In this print the artist has set a central gestural line pattern on a flat base with orthogonal structure. It is a typical work of an artist who was a major representative of the Informal.

The lithograph is signed lower right in pencil ‘Hartung’ and titled and dated ‘L-4-1976’ and ‘e.a.’ lower left in pencil. In the left margin is a full-height crease. There are handling creases in all margins. The overall condition is good. The image measures 42 x 57.8 cm, the sheet measures 63.8 x 90 cm.

Hans Hartung (1904-1989)

Hans Heinrich Ernst Hartung was born in 1904 in Leipzig. He worked as a painter and graphic artist. As early as a teenager he turned to the non-objective painting. In 1924, he began studying art history and philosophy at the University of Leipzig. After living in Menorca and in Paris, he received the French citizenship in 1946. After the war, Hartung became one of the most important representatives of the informal art. He exhibited several times at the documenta and at the Venice Biennale in 1960.
