TWO TRIPOD VESSELS WITH HANDLE AND SPOUT
Item Details
Description
Silver and gilding. China, presumably Six Dynasties period (until 589) to Tang (from 618), approx. 6th to 7th cent.
Two very rare, attractive as well as astonishingly precisely crafted vessels. Gilded zoomorphic, inclined and flared legs, somewhat similar to stags. Rounded vessel, stepped in the upper section, the mouth inclined and flared, spout on one side. In the well is a large engraved flower, outside on the wall three flower, each of them gilded. The curved handle projecting and with the heads of mythical creatures, namely two directly behind one another. On one vessel, a dragon head facing outwards, on the other, that of a phoenix; both with a neck. The second head, facing in the opposite direction and biting the handle, has a spiralling, curved-in nose and is possibly that of a sea monster. Patina and the usual silver-blackening, very good condition.
