Description
NATIVE AMERICAN WALKING STICK - MId 19th c Iroquois Maple 'Storytelling' Cane carved with a Biblical narrative within a spiraling serpent. The tapered and varnished shaft is fully and elaborately relief carved, Adam & Eve at top, Noah and the Ark at bottom, life of Christ between, from the Nativity to the Crucifixion. Snakes were a common theme, as canes were used to clear them from ones path, in this case also signifying the Devil. 34 1/2" long, with steel ice spike end. Nice age and use patina. Displayed at the 2003 Hudson Museum U of M, Orono exhibition "Stick to the Trail".
