Description
Egypt, Roman Period, ca. 2nd Century BCE to 1st Century CE. Â Finely-rendered ceramic with incised hair and fur, seated erect and alert on integral base, his genitals exposed and his tail curled close to body; Â two lug handles on either side with hole atop his head; pierced on each side of neck for suspension. Â Nice deep blue overall glaze. Â The baboon was sacred to the moon god Thoth and the patron of Egyptian scribes and scholars. This little pot was probably an ink well. Â Â Size: Â 3-1/4"H.
