Pre-Columbian, Vera Cruz, Mexico, Late Classic, ca. 550-950 CE. This ceramic warrior assuming a fierce fighting stance armed with a club in his right hand and a shield in his left was created in the Veracruz area of Mexico.  Note the ornate regalia including a fanciful headdress/helmet and chinstrap, magnificently delineated coiffure, large earspools, as well as intricately detailed pectoral, ankle cuffs, belt and loincloth.  The artisan skillfully employed both negative sculptural techniques (carving/incising) and positive techniques (building with appliques) to create the standing figure.  The attention to texture is remarkable.  Just look at the supple quality of that complexion, so fleshy.  His nose is almost dewy.  Beyond this is the attitude captured in his visage, with an open mouth, almost snarling lips, and steadfast gaze.  A wonderful example!  Size:  18-1/2" tall.  Wooden block stand adds 1-3/4" to height.

Repair at headdress and upper body reattached to lower.  Some minor losses to clothing and left earspool.  Nice manganese deposits and overall good condition despite repairs.
