Description
India, 19th-early 20th century AD. Cast bronze vessel in the form of the forepart of a cow decorated with numerous striations on the body and a Trishul at the shoulder. 305 grams, 12cm (4 3/4"). From an old London collection, formed in the 1980s. Known as a Gaumukhi Shringi, this is a ritual vessel for pouring libations over a statue of a deity. The name Gaumukhi means cow's mouth and relates to the glacier in the Himalayas of the same name, the source of the river Ganges. [No Reserve]
