JAMES MCNEIL WHISTLER (1834 - 1903) American artist a portrait painter with a pugnacious attitude best remembered for the portrait of his mother seated in a rocker. Fine signed photograph of his ca. 1871 oil ""Nocturne: Blue and Silver - Chelsea"" 21"" x 15 1/2"" signed ""Whistler"" in pencil and adding his delicate ""butterfly"" paraph beneath. Mat lightly toned else fine. Double-matted and ready to frame. This was the first of Whistler's Nocturnes. In these works Whistler aimed to convey a sense of the beauty and tranquility of the Thames by night. It was Frederick Leyland who first used the name ""nocturne"" to describe Whistler's moonlit scenes.
