Canton (China) Oct. 10 1837 to ""Reverend Charles Robinson Bankok Siam"". Parker writes at length about his experiences in China as well as being attacked by Japanese defenders when he tried to enter that country. In small part: ""…It was agreed by this mission…to invite a semi annual correspondence with our fellow laborers in the different Mis. Fields in this hemisphere …from a desire of hearing of their prosperity & the progress of Messiah…among them…The study of Chinese translating scriptures writing tracts…We enjoy the friendship of its residents Scoth Eng & American…We have a good Chapel Clock bell &c in Canton…we are very much like imprisoned debtors…We cannot preach as Paul did 'publicly & from house to house'…Mr. King & lady Mr. Gutzlaff…& myself embarked in the ship Morrison for Japan…We arrived in the Bay of Yedo…The government commenced firing…but ceased when we came to anchor. But...they renewed the fire many cannon balls flew about us…We left without affecting anything & sailed for Satuma the southern principality of Japan…remained three days & were again hastily repulsed…Our powers are too feeble to comprehend the vastness of the Eternal councils…"" Much more.
