A fine and rare pair of Fabergé silver and jasper table candlesticks in neo-Rococo style by the workmaster Julius Rappoport
Provenance: German private collection

The pair of candleholders by Fabergé from the manufacturing period between 1908 and 1916 is chased and casted of silver with scrolls, rocaille and foliage in neo-Rococo style. The form branches out over rocaille holders over a stand of Jasper standing on three knobbed feet into a baluster-shaped spout. The silver mount provides a nice contrast to the brick-red color of the Jasper plinth. The master of the pieces was Julius Rappoport who was especially well-known for his massive silver works of supreme quality.

The candlesticks are marked with Fabergé in Cyrillic and the Imperial Warrant, the Saint Petersburg city mark 1908-1917 and the workmaster’s mark ‘I.P.’ of Julius Rappoport, as well as with further repeated marks on the each single pieces. Both the candlesticks are in very good condition. The silver spout insets have been added later and do not have any marks. The candlesticks are stored in a case which the collector has especially created for them. The dimensions are each 13.4 x 9.5 x 15.5 cm (height x width x depth).

Peter Carl Fabergé (1846-1920)

Peter Carl Fabergé was born into a German-Baltic family of jewelers and took over the family’s jewelry shop in 1872. Besides working as a jeweler, he also worked at the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, where he cataloged the jewelry collection together with his brother. Fabergé obtained his breakthrough with the now world-famous Fabergé eggs; the first egg was awarded a gold medal by the Russian Emperor Alexander III. Henceforth, numerous masterpieces were created, many commissioned by the royal family. The Russian Revolution ended Fabergé’s business, but today his creations remain highly sought after by collectors. The ornate eggs fetch several million euros in the international auction market.

Julius Rappoport (1864-1916)

Julius Rappoport received his training in Berlin. He was one of the few of Fabergé’s employees of Jewish origin. He opened his first workshop in St. Petersburg in 1883 before he moved to Moscow to work for Fabergé as a workmaster. He belonged to one of the four workmasters of Fabergé, who were the main leaders of the workshops in the period between 1886 and 1908. His naturalistic animal figures of silver became well-known, he also executed special commissions for the Imperial court. (tm)
