Ban Chiang Bronze Spear Head
Item Details
Description
Southeast Asia, Thailand, Ban Chiang, ca. 1st millennium BCE. Bronze spear tip with medium length socket, leaf-shaped blade with distinct ridge down the center, covered in green patina and brown encrustations. The Ban Chiang culture, once believed to have been a technological backwater, actually had a sophisticated metallurgical industry as early as the first half of the 2nd millennium BCE - "over a thousand years earlier than was previously suspected and long before traces of any societies more complex than simple egalitarian villages show up in the archaeological record of the area" according to Elizabeth Hamilton of the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology (See Hamilton "Bronze from Ban Chiang, Thailand: A View from the Laboratory," Science and Archaeology, Vol. 43, Issue 2, July 2001)   A wonderful example of metallurgy from this Bronze Age culture! Size:  9-1/2"L (24 cm) .
