Description
Roman Empire, purportedly found in Britain, ca. 2nd century CE. One of my favorite examples of ancient art combining style and function! This spectacular solid silver spoon would have been used by the very wealthiest of the society. In the form of a hippocamp with long dolfin tail and horse-like front, atop a long slendor spoon, with garnet inset on the side of the mythical beast. Gilt overlay. Size: 7-1/2"L.
Provenance: Ex-Andrew Green Collection, Ex-Richard Neale Collection, acquired in early 19th Century.
