THOMAS GILBERT. Revolutionary War Tory, British Loyalist, Leader.
April 18, 1770-Dated, Colonial Period Manuscript Document Signed, “Tho Gilbert” as Justice of the Peace with a few lines in his hand, measuring7.5” x 11.25”, 1 page, Bristol (MA), Very Fine. Being a land deed in which Samual Holwell sells a plot of land to Elharah Peirce. Gilbert as Justice of the Peace for the County of Bristol, MA., signs at bottom after he notes “April the 18 Day 1770: then appeared Samuel Hollowell Subscriber to the above written instrument and acknowledged the same to be his act & deed before me”. Light wear from circulation and tone, overall clean and pleasing.
Thomas Gilbert (1715-1797) - Noted as "Leader of the New England Tories." Born in Freetown, Bristol County, Massachusetts. Elected to the General Assembly. Prominent in local affairs and opposition to Stamp Act participants. Appointed 1774 by British General Thomas Gage to lead (300) Loyalists to maintain Royal authority in Freetown and Taunton. He remained loyal throughout the Revolutionary War. His lands were confiscated and he emigrated to Nova Scotia in 1783.
