Pair of Alexander Stephens Carte de Visite Photographs
c. 1840s -60s Civil War Era and Earlier, Lot of Two, Carte de Visite Photographs, of Confederate States of America Vice President Alexander Stephens, Fine.
Lot of Two, Carte de Visite Photographs, both of Confederate VP Alexander Stephens, one by “C. E. Jones & Vanerson, Photographers, No. 77 Main Street, Richmond, VA.” The later in life and larger in size second CDV with no maker’s backmark.
1. This extremely rare, small size CDV measures about 2.25" x 3.25" being the smaller one. It has the Richmond backstamp with is very clear and readable, though there are prior mount stains to the lower reverse and bottom rim edge portion. The image shows him very young, his face looking almost “boyish.” In fact the only small size version and the earliest image of him we have ever encountered. The image also identified as “Alexander Stevens” (sic) in ink below the Photograph on the face side. No doubt a very rare image.
2. This more Civil War era image measures about 2.5" x 4" being the larger
CDV of this pair. Some scattered light foxing and a trivial thin at the lower right corner tip, while the reverse is very clean.
Alexander Hamilton Stephens (1812-1883) was an American politician from Georgia. He was Vice President of the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War. He also served as a U.S. Representative from Georgia, both before the Civil War and again after Reconstruction. Served as the 50th Governor of Georgia from 1882 until his death in 1883. (2 CDVs).
