Description
Presumably France, mid-19th century
Dimensions: 25 x 40.5 cm
Good condition
Landscape dominated by lush greens with small staffage.
Turning away from the academic classicism the painter of the French Barbizon school were seeking the direct access to nature. They created oil sketches directly in nature and used them for their paintings later in the studio. Also the present depiction of a landscape with a river running through lush green vegetation, is probably one of these open-air works. Nature is the center of attention, a rower, two cows and a few houses add only small accents.
The oil painting shows at the center left and right several scratches as well as overall some touch-ups. The varnished is slightly soiled. Additionally there are minor traces of a former framing. Apart from that the overall condition is age-appropriate good. The painting measures 25 x 40 cm. (fea)
