Empathic portrait of a farmer executed with fine brush strokes

The painting presented here was created by Düsseldorf history and portrait painter Franz Müller. Placed before a blue sky, the farmer’s view is wandering out of the image into the far distance. Franz Müller was trained, among others, by Eduard Bendemann, who was a prominent representative of the Düsseldorf School, especially known for his sensitive depictions of historical subjects and portraits.



The painting is signed lower left ‘Franz Müller’. It is in overall good condition. The edges show faint abrasions due to framing, a tiny hole in the upper margin. The frame shows some imperfections and traces of use. The image measures 24.5 x 22 cm, the framed dimensions are 43 x 38 cm.



Franz Müller (1843-1929)

Franz Müller was born in Dusseldorf in 1843. He trained as a historical and portrait painter at the Düsseldorf Academy of Art, where he was educated, among others, by Karl Ferdinand Sohn, Ernst Deger and Eduard Bendemann, who sustainably influenced Müller in his way painting.
