A rare example of Zittau silver work from the Baroque period!
This silver beaker is one rare example of the now mostly lost testimonies of Zittau gold and silver work of the Baroque era. It is of typical cylindrical shape on three ball feet and decorated with an engraved band of foliage along the upper and lower rim. On top rests a lid with a corresponding relief decoration and ball finial. Vessels of this kind are particularly rare since much of the Zittau silver treasures were lost during the destruction of the city in 1757 or were used to fund the subsequent reconstruction.
The cup is hallmarked on the base with the town mark ‘Z’ for Zittau, purity ‘12’ and maker’s mark ‘AB’ and engraving ‘I.R.S. 1731’. It is in good condition with signs of age and wear. The gilding is partly rubbed. A small, inconspicuous dent above one of the feet. The height measures 19 cm. (tfa)
